چکیده

We have constructed a broadband apparatus for wavelength metrology capable of absolute accuracy at a level of better than 2 parts in 109. An evacuated plane-parallel Fabry–Pérot interferometer with continuously adjustable mirror separation is used to compare the wavelength of a single-frequency tunable laser with that of an iodine-stabilized HeNe laser used as a wavelength standard. This work details apparatus construction, a thorough investigation of systematic errors, and data analysis. The wavelengths of five Doppler-free Te2 transitions in the region from 475.6 to 490.8 nm have been measured and are found to be in excellent agreement with previous measurements. In addition, the wavelengths of five previously unmeasured Te2 transitions spanning the region from 424.9 to 462.3 nm have been determined for use as new reference wavelength standards. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. An optical vernier technique for in situ measurement of the length of long Fabry–Pérot cavities

We propose a method for in situ measurement of the length of kilometre-sized Fabry–Pérot cavities in laser gravitational wave detectors. The method is based on the vernier, which occurs naturally when the laser beam incident on the cavity has a sideband. By changing the length of the cavity over several wavelengths we obtain a set of carrier resonances alternating with sideband resonances. From...

High-sensitivity measurements of the Kerr constant in gases using a Fabry–Pérot-based ellipsometer

The dc-Kerr constant was measured with high sensitivity in several gases, using a novel ellipsometer, which is based on a high-finesse Fabry–Pérot interferometer. An effective interaction length of 5.26 km was achieved by using a Fabry–Pérot interferometer with intracavity electrodes, yielding a single-pass sensitivity of ≈ 10 nanoradian. The dc-Kerr constants of CO2, N2, and O2 were determined...

Simple pressure-tuned Fabry–Pérot interferometer

A simple, compact and inexpensive pressure-tuned Fabry–Pérot interferometer is presented. It is used as a laser locking reference for optical frequencies where the use of an atomic reference is impractical. The scanning range is several GHz. Absolute positioning of the interferometer with an accuracy of 7 MHz rms over a range of 2 GHz is possible. The instrument is temperature stabilized and sh...

Enhanced Modulation Bandwidth of a Fabry–Pérot Semiconductor Laser Subject to Light Injection From Another Fabry–Pérot Laser

Variations in optical spectrum and modulation bandwidth of a modulated Fabry–Pérot (FP) semiconductor laser subject to the external light injection from another FP Laser is investigated in this paper. Optimal wavelength matching conditions for two FP lasers are discussed. A series of experiments show that two FP lasers should have a central wavelength overlapping and a mode spacing difference o...

Use of Fabry-Pérot lasers for simultaneous distributed strain and temperature sensing based on hybrid Raman and Brillouin scattering

In this paper we propose the use of multi-longitudinal mode lasers, such as Fabry-Pérot (FP) lasers, for simultaneous distributed strain and temperature sensing based on hybrid Brillouin and Raman scattering. Fabry-Pérot lasers allow for high-power Raman intensity measurement and the simultaneous detection of the Brillouin frequency shift parameter for all FP longitudinal modes, by using a self...
